WANDER THROUGH WONDER
The Commonwealth’s only national forest, the Allegheny National Forest, stretches across 514,000 acres of rugged terrain and wild beauty in northwestern Pennsylvania. Just a few hours from major cities, it’s the perfect escape for hiking, biking, paddling, and wildlife watching in every season.

Birding
Over 250 species can be spotted across the region. Look for bald eagles along the Allegheny Reservoir, warblers in the hardwoods, and herons near Buzzard Swamp and Marilla Reservoir. Timberdoodle Flats, off Rt. 59, is a favorite loop for birdwatchers.

Biking
Family-friendly rides include the Kinzua Valley Trail, Shawmut Trail in Smethport, and the Crook Farm and McDowell Trails in Bradford. The expanding Knox & Kane Rail Trail will soon stretch 74 miles to Kinzua Bridge State Park.

Chase the Wild in The Allegheny National Forest
At its heart is the Allegheny Reservoir, where visitors can fish, kayak, or take in sweeping views from overlooks like Rimrock and Jakes Rocks. The Longhouse National Scenic Byway winds through some of the region’s most stunning scenery, especially vibrant in fall. With more than 600 miles of trails—including 96 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail—there’s no shortage of ways to explore.

Waterways
Paddle peaceful routes along the Allegheny River and Potato Creek. These beginner-friendly water trails offer forested banks, wildlife sightings, and multiple launch sites—some ADA accessible. The Allegheny River Water Trail stretches over 80 miles, connecting scenic towns and inviting multi-day paddling adventures.

Snowmobiling
Winter transforms the forest into a snowy snowmobiling paradise with over 360 miles of interconnected trails. Riders can explore rolling hills, frozen lakes, and forested corridors that make every mile a winter adventure. Top staging areas include Willow Creek and Timberline, which connect to trail systems in neighboring counties.

Mountain Biking
Jakes Rocks features 30+ miles of professionally designed singletrack for all skill levels. Riders also enjoy Morrison Trail and shared-use paths like Timberline and Marienville. Many forest roads and old logging routes are open to mountain and gravel bikes for an epic unforgettable experience.
Go Off-Roading with Unforgettable ATV Riding
For off-road adventure, head to the designated ATV trails in the Allegheny National Forest. Popular routes include the Marienville, Timberline, and Majestic trails, which offer miles of looped riding through scenic woodlands and are open seasonally from late May to the end of September. Situated on nearly 1,000 acres and featuring over 41 miles of trails, Majestic Kamp & Lost Trails is a popular destination for ATV riding year-round.

Waterfalls
Short hikes lead to hidden falls like Bent Run, a rocky cascade near Kinzua Dam, and Hector Falls, tucked in the woods near Ludlow. These natural wonders, perfect after a rainfall or spring snowmelt, offer a chance to experience the forest’s peaceful beauty up close.

Fishing
Cast a line in the Allegheny Reservoir, East Branch Lake, or one of the area’s many stocked trout streams like Marvin Creek and Kinzua Creek. Smallmouth bass, walleye, and brook trout are favorites among local anglers.

Hunting
The Allegheny National Forest offers excellent public hunting grounds for deer, bear, turkey, and small game. Plan your trip around peak seasons and consider lesser-traveled areas near Buzzard Swamp or Red Bridge for a more secluded experience.
