Allegheny National Forest
The Allegheny National Forest in McKean County, Pennsylvania, is a vast expanse of public land known as “Pennsylvania’s only national forest.” Established in 1923, it covers more than half a million acres of rolling hills, hardwood forests, and pristine waterways. Visitors can enjoy year-round recreation, from hiking, biking, and camping to boating, fishing, and winter sports. The forest is home to the famous Kinzua Sky Walk, a repurposed railroad bridge offering sweeping views of the Kinzua Gorge, as well as more than 600 miles of trails that connect to regional and national trail systems. Beyond outdoor adventure, the Allegheny National Forest plays a key role in conservation, wildlife habitat protection, and sustainable forestry, making it both a natural and cultural treasure of McKean County.
