Trail Central | Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau is bringing Trolls in the Forest in McKean County – A world-class public art experience by internationally renowned artist Thomas Dambo — bringing three giant hand-built trolls to Bradford, Kane & the Allegheny National Forest, created with local residents and celebrating the spirit of Trail Central.

Thomas Dambo, a Danish environmental artist creates giant, 30′ – 36′ made from recycled and reclaimed materials. There are 170 trolls throughout 21 States and 20 countries. The Trolls In McKean County would be Pennsylvania’s first permanent installation.

Trail Central is seeking contributions to bring the Trolls in the Forest and the direct economic stimulus, community engagement, and environmental education to McKean County. The Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau has partnered with Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise (KARE) to offer tax deductibility for contributions through their 501(c)3 as our fiscal agent. There are easy ways to donate to the project:

All donations over $250 will receive a receipt from the Alleghany National Forest Visitors Bureau and Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise for tax purposes. 

Trolls’ mythology and folklore draw their magic as guardians of nature. Trail Central’s promotion of outdoor recreation aligns with Thomas Dambo’s core elements – encourage people to connect with nature, raise awareness about recycling, and storytelling that inspire environmental stewardship. Spend time exploring, troll hunting and being in nature are core elements of the Trolls and Trail Central’s commitment to outdoor recreation.

Through The Trolls in the Forest, visitors will rediscover their sense of wonder and understand the powerful connection between creativity, sustainability, and protecting the natural world.

The Trolls in the Forest features three locations, spanning from the northern to southern end of McKean County. Troll installations are planned in Kane, Bradford, and somewhere in between. This will be Pennsylvania’s first permanent installation.

Trail Central’s Trolls In the Forest demonstrates a commitment to attraction development that enhances the quality of life and drives economic growth across McKean County, benefiting residents and visitors alike.

Other US destinations have experienced the “Dambo Effect” on local economies. Because the trolls are often hidden or part of a trail, they turn a single visit into a multi-day adventure. An increase in visitors will increase revenue for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and shops. The inclusion in Dambo’s trollmap will provide exposure in this growing phenomenon.

The trolls pay homage to the lumber history and provide a whimsical way to highlight waste no more and environmental stewardship. Every troll is made from 100% recycled material and has a folk tale with a unique identity.

Trolls are built on site with the help of the local communities and provide volunteers the opportunity to assemble the bodies and limbs, creating a deep sense of ownership over the sculptures.

Trolls are strategically placed within green spaces, hidden in woods and near trails, creating connectors across communities and McKean County.

Trolls in the Forest come to McKean County on the heels of Pennsylvania being in the national spotlight.
